Tillaux and triplane fractures Matthew, a 15year old boy presents with a painful, swollen ankle after a skateboarding accident. He has seen his GP who has arranged an X-ray in the community and the report states that he has a Tillaux fracture. You have never come across this type of fracture before and have no idea what this means! Tillaux and triplane fractures are ‘transitional’ ankle fractures that only occur in older children and adolescents at the time the distal tibial growth plate starts to fuse. This process takes approximately 18months and therefore ankle injuries during this period can result in unique fracture patterns. I would highly recommend reading these two excellent articles from DFTB to learn more. DFTB: Tillaux fracture DFTB: Triplane fracture Dr Danielle Scarfe
