Identifying hypertension in children We know how to spot hypotension in children but what about hypertension? Hypertension in children is defined as a BP >95th percentile for height. Diagnosing hypertension in children - the easy way 1) Measure the BP with an appropriate sized cuff 2) Measure the height of the child and plot this on a growth chart to determine the height percentile (if you don't have access to these in your workplace follow the links below) 3) Using this chart, select the sex and age of the child and find the number at the intersection of the height percentile and the 95th percentile for both the systolic and diastolic BPs 4) Compare the BP reading to this number. If the child is hypertensive, confirm this over at least 3 readings and check the size of your cuff. Easy :) Growth charts In Australia, we use the WHO growth charts for children 0-2yrs which can be found here. For children over the age of 2yrs we use the CDC growth charts, these can be found here.
